Already a cult classic, the release of Nosferatu late last year firmly reestablished Count Orlok as a haunting and shadowy villain, terrifying in his manipulations of the world around him as you succumb to the darkness he brings. We loved the modern yet dark and gothic retelling of this influential horror favorite, but we’re even more obsessed with @ladyparadox’s take on the 1922 classic.

In Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, Count Orlok has a distinctive appearance, with a large, hooked nose, claw-like fingernails, hollowed eyes, and a large, bald head; one of the most famous stills of the film is the shadowy hand reaching across the frame. His vampiric fangs, rather than elongated canines, are placed at the front of the mouth, evoking the image of a rat. In most of the promotional art, Orlok is cast in shadows, with lanky limbs and a thin frame, talon-like hands, and large, pointed ears.

We can see where @ladyparadox has taken directly from the source material in her fantastic Count Orlok transformation; her fangs are also placed directly at the front of the mouth to elongate the incisors into points, and she uses prosthetics such as a bald cap and pointed ears to help achieve the silhouette of the original Count. Dark makeup to contour helps to create a harsh juxtaposition and a skeletal, alien look that further distinguishes the Count as a non-human entity.

Keeping everything sharp and pointed, @ladyparadox creates a high contour line, halfway up the actual cheekbone, and uses a dark, almost black pigment that fades into a smoky grey. A C-shaped curve is also painted on at the temples to create a hollowed-out effect. This gives the face an almost shrink-wrapped appearance, with the white skin seemingly paper-thin where it is stretched out over the gaunt hollows of the skull. This sickly accent is emphasised by @ladyparadox adding faint, blue veins and a stippled, rusty red over the top for a translucent look. As Orlok is thought to be where vampires became mortally vulnerable to sunlight in popular culture, this hauntingly pale appearance is in line with the nocturnal creatures' habits.

Dark, smoky makeup around the eyes, including a wide spread of shadow over the upper and lower lid, creates the bug-eyed stare and hollowed-socket look of Max Schreck (the actor who plays Count Orlok) in the original film. The dark eye makeup also ensures the red of the Monster Red Contact Lenses pops against the white base of the face. Red contact lenses are always a great choice for vampire or demon costumes; the red pigmentation is completely different from a regular human eye and reflects the often bloodthirsty portrayals of these sorts of characters.

Our bestselling Vampire Zombie Red Costume Contact Lenses are perfect for a range of costumes, their simple block color design making them extremely versatile, and the bold, blood-red color is super impactful!

For an even more monstrous design, check out our Mini Sclera Red Costume Contact Lenses; these mini sclera contact lenses have a large diameter, meaning that they completely cover the iris and even part of the whites of your eyes! These SFX contact lenses are eye-catching and an instant show stopper.

@missabbiemeghan was also inspired by the latest vampire-themed blockbuster release. Based on the movie Sinners, she used the Mesh White Costume Contact Lenses in her gory Halloween makeup look to recreate the dead and soulless gaze of the vampires in the movie. Our White Mesh contact lenses will slightly impair your vision, due to the fact that their criss-cross design does not include a clear pupil hole; however, the small holes do allow a small amount of light through, meaning that you do retain some vision.

Our Blind Grey Contact Lenses would also be great for a Sinner’s costume this Halloween. However, this pair of lenses may be better suited for a photoshoot in your bedroom than out and about at parties or outside. The blind contact lens design does not include a pupil hole, similar to the mesh lenses, and its opaque colored design means that it is extremely hard to see through them. You may be able to see lights and vague outlines, however, your vision will be heavily obscured with these contact lenses. These lenses are a great match for the appearance of the vampires in the movie, but we don’t recommend wearing them out to parties or other dark, enclosed spaces due to their low visibility!

This film is a great one to watch during spooky season, and a costume inspired by this movie or a cosplay of one of the characters would make an eye-catching contemporary costume! Pop-culture references are always popular for Halloween, and we think that this movie, which was a huge success at the box office earlier in the year, will be making a resurgence. The historical elements of the film also mean that you can have fun with the styling and costuming, such as the way @missabbiemeghan has done her hair.

With the help of a generous application of our Mehron Bright Arterial Fake Stage Blood (9oz) SFX blood and the use of our white mesh contact lenses, @missabbiemeghan turns a potentially plain costume into a stand-out one! Fake blood is a fun and exciting way to transform any Halloween costume, adding a gory and terrifying edge to your look. In her vampire makeup look, part of her Easy Halloween Looks series, @makeupby_esc returns the classics: red contact lenses. She uses the Twilight Volturi Red Costume Contact Lenses, which have a blood red centre around the pupil and a darker limbal ring, dispersed with a lighter brown for a more blended look. @makeupby_esc also uses a more traditional, smaller line of fake blood trailing down from the corner of the mouth for a more delicate blood-sucking appearance. Whether you go all-out on your fake blood use or keep it dainty, it’s a great way to signify what exactly you’re dressed up as for Halloween!

Many different lens styles are ideal for a vampire costume; check out our Vampire Contact Lenses for nearly one hundred different designs, all perfect for Halloween! It also depends on what sort of costume you’ll be creating this Halloween. Go all out like @ladyparadox and create a sure winner with a dramatic yet horrifying Count Orlok costume, or take a more simple yet creative and fun approach like @missabbiemeghan, using plenty of SFX blood to create a messy and gory look! Or, keep it traditional and create a simple vampire costume like @makeupby_esc’s, with a small and contained line of fake blood dripping from the corner of the mouth and blood red contact lenses to up the wow factor.
