Are contact lenses safe?

This is the question we get asked most often, and the answer is yes! As long as you get your contact lenses from a trusted and reliable provider, they will be completely safe for your eyes. On the Crazy Lenses website, we only stock lenses made with the highest quality materials. You can check out each lens page for the FDA-rating and CE-marking, and for other important information like the materials and water content. If you ever have any doubts about whether or not certain materials will be safe for your eyes, we recommend asking your GP before purchasing the lenses.

Who can wear contact lenses?

The second most common question we get is, “Can I wear contact lenses?” As we said earlier, contact lenses are safe and ok for absolutely everyone, unless you have a specific allergy or eye condition that precludes you. We think that everyone has the right to a gorgeous transformation, which is why we have special ranges aimed specifically at people with light eyes or dark eyes. Our dark-eyed customers can often struggle with finding bold and striking lenses that show up over their eyes, but no longer! Shop our lenses for dark eyes here, for high-coverage contacts that will show up over any eye color.

Contact Lens Duration vs.Contact Lens Expiry-

What is contact lens expiry? And how is it different from lens duration? Well, first things first- duration refers to how long you can use the lenses for. At Crazy Lenses, we sell three different durations: daily, 30-day, and 90-day. Our daily lenses can be worn for one day only. Our 30-day lenses can be worn for 30 days after the package is opened, and our 90-day lenses can be worn for 90 days after the package is opened. Find out more about durations here.

Regardless of duration, ALL lenses have an expiry date, just like any perishable product. This expiry date tells you when the lenses go out of date. After this date, you can no longer use your lenses, and must throw them away.

How to use your lenses- receiving your packaging

  1. When you get your packaging, make sure to read it BEFORE you open it, so that you can return the lenses in case of any issues.

  2. Ensure that the lens type, duration, and expiry date are all right.

  3. Check the lenses through the small window on your blister packaging to look for damage or debris.

How to use your lenses- prepping your lenses

  1. With clean hands, open your lens packaging and check for damage or debris.

  2. Wash the lenses with fresh contact lens solution, rubbing gently with your fingers.

  3. Place the lenses in a sterile contact lens case, along with some fresh contact lens solution.

  4. Leave to soak for 2 hours.

How to use your lenses- inserting your lenses

  1. With clean hands, place the lens on your index finger, right-side up. It should look like a soft U-shape. If the lens has a V-shape, it may be inside out.

  2. With your other hand, hold your eyelid gently open.

  3. Place the lens on your eye, and let it adjust. Blink a few times if it helps.

You can find more information on how to insert your contact lenses here.

How to use your lenses- removing your lenses

  1. With clean hands, hold your eye gently open.

  2. Pinch the lens up and out. Don’t worry if it takes you a couple of tries.

You can find more information on how to remove your contact lenses here.

How to use your lenses- storing your lenses

  1. For re-usable lenses (30-day and 90-day), you’ll need to clean your contacts and store them safely until your next use. Start with clean hands.

  2. Use fresh contact lens solution to rinse off the lenses, rubbing gently between your fingers.

  3. Place the lenses in a sterile contact lens case, along with some fresh contact lens solution.

  4. Leave until your next use. If the lenses are left for multiple days, make sure to check them periodically, and add more contact lens solution if they appear to be drying out.

What is contact lens solution?

We’ve mentioned it quite a few times, but what actually is contact lens solution, and why is it important? Contact lens solution (or eye-safe solution) is simply an antibacterial, sterile solution that can be used to clean and store your lenses. It’s safe for your eyes, and antibacterial, which means that it will get rid of any harmful bacteria or debris on the lenses.

Contact Lenses - DOs and DON’Ts

  • DO handle your lenses with clean hands.

  • DO rinse your lenses with contact lens solution to clean them.

  • DO leave your lenses to soak for 2 hours between uses.

  • DO follow the recommended duration and wear time.

  • DON’T wear your lenses after their expiry date.

  • DON’T wear your lenses for longer than 8 hours at a time.

  • DON’T wear your lenses overnight.

  • DON’T let any foreign substances come into contact with your lenses (including water). This means that you can’t wear your lenses in the shower, in the pool, or in the ocean.

Why do my eyes hurt?

As we said, all of our lenses are completely safe for use. However, some may be thicker and less flexible than others, and some special styles, like our blind lenses, may impair your vision. Make sure that you inform yourself on your lenses before trying them on, so that you know exactly what to expect. If, however, your eyes are hurting and you’re not sure why, here are our troubleshooting steps:

  1. Remove the lenses.

  2. Check that the lenses are the right way round, and free of any damage or debris.

  3. Rinse the lenses again in fresh eye-safe solution.

  4. Ensure that you left 2 hours from first opening the packaging.

  5. Ensure that you’re not wearing the lenses outside of their recommended duration or expiry date.

  6. Ensure that the lens measurements are right for your eyes.

  7. Try inserting the lenses again.

If the problem persists, please remove the lenses and contact your GP. We’re always happy to help with blurriness or discomfort (you can contact us here), but for urgent issues, we recommend going straight to a healthcare professional.
