What to expect when first wearing contact lenses-

If you’ve never worn contact lens before, you probably hve a lot of questions about how contact lenses work. Don’t worry- we’re here to help! Your first time weaning contact lenses might feel a little unusual, but you’ll be a lens pro in no time. Here’s what you should know before putting in your contact lenses for the first time:

  • Lenses all have different durations and expiry dates. Check the package- have you got the lenses you ordered? And are they in date?

  • Most lenses come in blister packaging, which gives you a little clear window. This means that you can check your lenses for any damage or debris before you open the box. This is just in case of any problems- sealed packages are much easier to return, due to hygiene reasons.

  • Before you put your lenses in for the first time, you’ll need to prep them. This means washing them in contact lens solution and leaving them to soak for a minimum of two hours. This is very important, as the blister packs are full of a stronger, harsher solution that’s intended to keep the lenses fresh for as good as possible. This will be a little too strong for your eyes, and may lead to discomfort, which is why you need to use the eye-safe solution to clean and soak your lenses. After the recommended two hours, your lenses will be ready to wear!

How to put in contact lenses for the first time-

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water, ensuring that they’re clean of any debris.

  2. Rinse the lenses with fresh eye-safe solution, rubbing gently between your fingertips.

  3. Place the first lens on your finger-tip, ensuring that it’s the right way round. You’re looking for a soft U-shape. If the lens has a sharp V-shape, it may be inside-out.

  4. Hold your eyelid open with your free hand.

  5. Look up, and gently place the lens on your eyeball.

  6. Close your eye, and wait a few seconds before opening it again.

  7. If the lens isn’t sitting in the centre of your eye, you can blink a few times to adjust it. Don’t worry- it takes everyone a few tries to get the positioning just right.

Pro Tip: Make sure not to get your lenses mixed up, especially if you’re planning on re-using them. The easiest way to keep them organised is by always inserting/removing your RIGHT lens first. Most lens cases will have R and L labels, but you can also write them on the bottom of the case if needed.
