How to Look After Your Lenses in the Sun

Ready for a summer full of contact lens fun? With plenty of parties, events, and days out in the sun, we’re sure that this will be a great time for colored contact lenses. From bold costume lenses for dress-up parties to realistic natural contacts for switching up your summery look, contact lenses are all the rage this summer! But with the sun, sand, and sea, how can you be sure that you’re protecting both your eyes and your new lenses from the summer? In today’s blog, we’ll go over all of our eyecare DOs and DON’Ts, and how to make absolutely sure that you’re keeping your eyes safe and happy all summer long!

Why is summer bad for my eyes?

Your eye health can be good or bad at any time of year, but today we’re thinking about the factors that derive specifically from summer, and how they can affect our eyes. We’re talking about the dry wind, high heat, itchy sand, and salty seawater. All of these things can get into your eyes, irritating them and drying them out. If you’re wearing lenses, foreign substances like seawater or suncream can also react negatively with the lens materials, irritating your eyes further and making the lenses unusable.

How can I avoid this?

Here are our top summer eyecare DOs and DON’Ts, so that you can keep your eyes super healthy and hydrated:

• Wear eye protection (like sunglasses) to protect from the bright sun and dryness. 

• Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, and keep your eyes and lenses as hydrated as possible with eye-safe solution.

• Keep yourself healthy with plenty of sleep and a good diet. Well-rested and well-fed eyes are healthy eyes.

• Wear your contact lenses for shorter periods of time. We usually say no longer than 8 hours at a time, but if you feel your eyes getting dry, you can take out your lenses even earlier, and give your eyes a rest.

• Don’t wear your lenses overnight, or in the shower.

• You should also avoid getting any foreign substances in your eyes- this means no seawater, sand, suncream, or even moisturiser. The best way to ensure this is to take your lenses out any time you’re planning a beach trip or pool day.

• Make sure that you’re always washing your hands before handling contact lenses, to avoid even the smallest bit of product or debris entering your eye.

• This is a year-round tip: Avoid excessive screentime! Blue light can tire your eyes out even further, so try to avoid screens when possible. If you have to use a screen, make sure to give yourself plenty of breaks.

• Finally, make sure that you’re following all of the usual lens care tips (e.g. clean them with eye-safe solution, follow the duration and expiry date, etc). Want to find out more about contact lens care? Read all of our care guides below.
