Putting something in your eye may seem weird at first, especially if it’s your first time doing so, but it’s actually very easy and will feel like second nature once you’ve got the hang of it!
Here’s a Step-By-Step Guide to putting in contact lenses:
Step 1: Wash your hands with warm soapy water, rinse and dry them thoroughly.
Step 2: Rinse your contact lenses with contact lens solution and leave them to soak in fresh lens solution for at least 2 hours before use. For contact lens care and cleaning, you should only use contact lens solution. Water, saliva and other household products are not suitable for lens care.
Step 3: Place the lens on the tip of your index/first finger, checking that it is the right way round. The lens should appear U shaped with no lip, rather than V shaped with a lip.
Step 4: Hold your upper eyelid with your other hand so that you don’t blink.
Step 5: Pull down your lower eyelid using your finger on the opposite hand that you’re applying the contact lens with.
Step 6: Look up and gently place the lens on the lower part of your eye.
Step 7: Slowly close your eyelid and keep your eyes closed for a moment.
Step 8: Blink several times to centre the lens and then repeat the process with your other eye.
If you need extra help with inserting your coloured contact lenses or want to make the process quicker and easier, you can purchase an inserter wand to go with your contact lenses. This is a small wand with a suction cup at the end. Attach your contact lens to the suction cup so that you can easily place the lens on your eyes. Release it from the wand and let your lens settle onto your eye.
Pro Tip: To avoid mixing up your contact lenses, we recommend you always apply and remove the lens for your RIGHT eye first. Most contact lens cases have an R and L on them but you can always write it on the outside of the lid if it doesn’t or isn’t obvious enough.
Checklist Before Opening Your Contact Lenses
Once you have completed this checklist, open your contact lenses and soak them for at least 2 hours before use in fresh multipurpose lens solution. You can get all the accessories and solution that you need on our website to ensure you can carry out proper care routines.
Troubleshooting Insert and Comfort Problems
If your lens feels uncomfortable, first try removing and inspecting the lens for damage or any dust/fluff that may be on it.
If the lens is damaged, do not attempt to wear it. Instead, contact our customer services team to let us know about the problem, making sure to quote your order ID. If possible, take a picture of the damage to help our team quickly deal with the issue.
If your lens does not appear damaged, rinse with contact lens solution and reapply.
You can also check that the lens is the correct orientation. The lens should appear ‘U’ shaped rather than ‘V’ shaped. For some coloured contact lenses, the print makes it obvious but for others, you will need to closely inspect the shape of the lens as it sits on the end of your finger.
If you continue to experience discomfort, check that the base curve and diameter match your measurements from your latest contact lens fitting. You should always make sure to check this before opening your contact lenses anyway. If you have prescription lenses that are different for each eye, make sure you have the right lens for each eye.
Due to certain conditions, you may experience heightened sensitivity to your lenses at certain times. For example, if you suffer from hay fever at certain times of the year, you may not be able to wear contact lenses during that time. In our Customer Disclaimer, which is a stage of the checkout process, there is a list of eye conditions that may mean that you are not eligible to wear coloured contact lenses.
You should also make sure to avoid other contaminants that may be in the air or on your face while you insert your contact lenses for example, perfume, smoke, deodorant, hairspray, makeup and moisturiser.
Make sure that you have soaked your contact lenses in contact lens solution for at least 2 hours before wear. Skipping this step means that your lenses don’t have the chance to reach the perfect PH. The storage solution for your coloured contacts has a higher concentration than multipurpose lens solution which is why this step is important, even for single-use daily lenses.
Our final tip is to make sure you only wear your lenses for up to 8 hours a day to make sure your eyes have time to breathe and refresh before your next use. While our contact lenses are made from soft flexible material that is lightweight, it is still important to give your eyes a break and is especially important not to sleep while wearing your coloured contacts.
If you do notice any redness or irritation, or become aware of the feeling of the contact lens in your eye due to discomfort or stinging, remove the contact lens immediately and check your eye. If you notice any discharge or your eye continues to look or feel irritated, seek assistance and advice from your eye doctor.
While it is important to be aware of how to deal with any problems should they arise, you are likely to find that preparing and inserting your contact lenses is easier than you first thought. Even if you are new to wearing Halloween coloured contact lenses, choosing soft FDA Approved lenses will ease you into your first time experience. Enjoy the breathable flexible surface and the vibrant designs of Halloween, cosplay, or natural contact lenses.
